Just a few minutes' walk from the central core of buildings on the Symons Campus, Trent's nature areas (which make up more than half of the 580-hectare campus) have been preserved for teaching, research and recreation. These areas -- which include a diverse range of habitats, including drumlins, wetlands, woodlots and open fields -- are home to white-tailed deer, porcupines, squirrels, rabbits, herons, hawks, more than 100 species of butterfly, and numerous other varieties of wildlife.

From the Trent website: Trent's deliberately small size and hallmark college system support our ability to focus on all university members as individuals, and as full members of an academic and social community. More than 80 per cent of our classes have fewer than 25 students, which means an environment in which students can pursue fields of interest intensively, and with ample access to teaching resources.

Trent University is fortunate to have a large, attractive and ecologically diverse campus. Its 12 nature areas are useful for teaching, scientific research and nature interpretation. They provide opportunities for outdoor recreation and enhance the campus aesthetically. They also serve to maintain the ecological and human health of the region.

Housing: Much more than just places to live, Trent's residences are part of its one-of-a-kind college system. Each College is an intellectual and social neighborhood -- a centre of academic and social activity, housing professors' offices, small lecture halls and seminar rooms. The Colleges sponsor visits by scholars, writers and public figures, and organize lecture series, seminars, concerts, films, dances and pub nights.
